Essential Traveling For Senior Citizens on the Go

By Karen Abby

One of the real joys of retirement and enjoying your senior years may come in the form of travel. Travel is broadening and many senior citizens save for a lifetime to enjoy a lifestyle of travel once they are retired. The image of becoming a world traveler in their senior years is one of those dreams that kept them going when life was tough in their working years so they certainly deserve to hit the road and enjoy the fruit of a lifetime of work.

If this is the kind of retirement fun that you have in mind, it pays to plan ahead so you travel smart. Being prepared for a long trip makes sense for anybody but if these trips you will be taking are to be the dream trips you want them to be, you do not want to see those vacations turn into travel nightmares.

A big part of smart traveling is planning well in advance what you are going to need on the trip. But it may be even more important to know what you are NOT going to need. By packing light, you make the chore of pulling large pieces of luggage through the airport less difficult. And if you are going to be staying in several places on the trip, packing light means less repacking as well.

It will take some experience as to what works for you in a travel situation to know how to pack. You may wish to build a special travel wardrobe of garments that wear well under stress, do not wrinkle and can be rinsed out and used again on the road thus extending their usefulness and cutting down on excess clothing. Another way you can cut down on the bulk en route is to not take very much with you that can be bought when you get there. By not taking a lot of toiletries, you cut down on the problems with airport security and the chance of toiletries leaking in your bags.

Smart traveling for senior citizens also means having your prescriptions all up to date and well documented. Make copies of all prescription for drugs, eyeglass, and other documents that you may need to get refills on the road should you lose or run through your medicines. It is a good practice to carry onset of copies with you and one set in your suitcase or travel bag in case you become separated from either one you have a back up. In addition file copies of all of your travel documents with a loved one so even if you lose everything, you can still get your documents sent to you or by email or fax.

Alert your local pharmacy so if they need to consult with a pharmacy where you are going, that phone call will not catch them by surprise. These kinds of precautions eliminate panic in the event of a problem while traveling.

Similarly make sure your itinerary and copies of your passport and credit card numbers are kept in secure places and on file with a loved one. Go through your wallet and think about each card and important document you have and how you would handle having those cards canceled and replaced should you lose your wallet or purse. By keeping those important numbers where you can get to them quickly, you can move fast to cancel credit cards and get replacements virtually immediately from your hotel should you get robbed or lose your valuables while traveling.

By thinking ahead like this and staging in your mind every possible problem and planning how to respond, you eliminate the chance that your trip could be stopped and your fun brought to an end because of a difficulty. Then when things do go wrong, you just shift to plan A-B-C or D and you are right back in business.

Guard Dog Mini-Rechargeable Stun-Gun Flashlight Product Review

By Karen Abby

Live in a bad neighborhood? Always leaving work after dark? Feeling safe in your own home, at the office, or walking to your car on a dark night are very important. Sometimes pepper-spray is not enough to ward off attackers and something more durable is what you are looking for. In the market of nonlethal self defense products, the Stun Gun Flashlight can be a wise and life saving choice.

Stunguns always pack a punch but with the Guard Dog brand you are getting two features in one. The clever look of the device disguises the fact that it is a stun weapon, because it looks like a typical flashlight. The 3 super bright light emitting diodes (L.E.D.) are several times brighter than your average flashlight bulb making poor visibility not an issue additionally it can be used to hinder a would be attackers vision.

The loud crackle of this super charged stunner flashlight can set off a "do not mess with me sucker" message to deter attackers, burglars, and other criminals from proceeding with their dastardly plans, and should keep away humans and animals alike. But if this is not enough, when the stun function is activated this will surely do the trick. With an output voltage of 2.9 million volts, makes for an extremely intimidating weapon.

Through testing we have found that the Guard Dog brand stun flashlight device is very easy to use and will fit into the smallest of hands. Operation is cinch with one switch that operates the flashlight. The feature that I found most accommodating was the large red activation button above the flashlight button to activate the stun feature. For safety, a switch was placed on the bottom of the unit which controls power to the stun gun.

The Guard Dog Stun Gun Flashlight is also rechargeable; it is recommended that the internal batteries be charged for 8 to 10 hours prior to first use. The flashlight plugs into any 110 volt wall socket with the included charging plug making the recharge process a snap. It holds a charge for up to three months but it is recommended that if unused you should recharge it every two months.

The expert construction of the Guard Dog Stun Zapper Flashlight and the heavy duty materials make this a product that should last for many years under normal use. The dimensions are as follows: the head is 1.5 inches in diameter, the body is 1 inch in diameter, and the whole unit is only 7 inches long. Additional accessories included are a wrist strap and heavy duty nylon holster with belt loop.

The Evolution of Women's Self Defense

By Karen Abby

Not long ago, crime was something that happened to other people. It happened in cities or "high crime areas" but not in quiet little towns where moms take kids to the park, jog alone or go to and from work at all hours of the day and night. Things have changed a lot. It seems that potential attackers target their attack toward women. In the past self defense weapons have been marketed almost exclusively to men, leaving women very few places to go to find protection. Lack of information and access to reliable and effective weapons has left many women vulnerable, injured or dead.

More recently, there has been more importance on womens self defense. There are many self defense classes to choose from and volumes of ideas on self defense. However, women need more. Self defense classes are important and not to be minimized, they often leave a bit to be desired. For example, if you are 5'2" and 100 pounds, even with self defense training it might be quite difficult - if not, impossible - to fight off a 6 foot tall attacker.

There is a way to reinforce a womens self defense, as well as, help women get the same access to self defense weapons as men have traditionally had. There are self defense products and weapons available to everyone over 18 years old and are very effective to use in self defense.

Products such as pepper-spray, for instance, come in various forms and styles. There is pepper spray, pepper foam and pepper gel. Some of these products come hidden inside fake ballpoint pens, lipstick tubes, flashlights, cell phones and more. They are easy to conceal and easy to use.

There are tasers and stun guns which send non lethal, powerful electric volts into would-be attackers and incapacitate these attackers, giving a person time to get away and get help. These tools are extremely effective come in compact packages and various colors. They fit in a hand bag or pocket and are easy to use. Women's self defense is essential and critical. It is important for women to have choices in being able to protect and defend themselves in a way that gives them security.

Information For People Who Want to Overcome Fear But Cannot Get Started

By Karen Abby

Burglars, rapists and attackers should beware. Women are finding new ways to protect themselves. One weapon that is becoming popular among self defense products is the cell phone stun gun. This small cell phone want to be is worn clipped to your purse or belt. To the unknowing eye, you are defenseless. However, you have a stun weapon that can be pressed into the attacker and zap them. Criminals prey on the ones they think are defenseless, so you need to have a plan of escape.

Naturally, the stun phone is not lethal and will not cause any permanent harm. The purpose is not to incapacitate the person. It is to shock them just long enough for you to get away. Like with any stun device, the longer you hold the trigger, the more of a shock the person will get.

Many people fear for their own safety with a stun device. The cell phone stun gun is completely safe to the person using it. It has a safety switch that when activated, will not hurt anyone. Additionally, you have to push the trigger to make it go off.

Most of the stun devices available today are between 800,000 and 3 million volts. While this is enough to drop anyone down temporarily, do not think they are down for the count. The purpose of this device is to make it possible for you to get away as soon as possible.

These stun devices look just like a regular cell phone. They are about 4 inches tall and slender. They come in various colors and include a holster. There are two models a battery model that usually includes the batteries or the rechargeable model which includes an internal charging system. One brand even offers a siren alarm function. Most of the brands available also have a built in flashlight to light your way to the car.

When used the way it is intended, a cell phone stun gun can provide you with another defense tool to help you feel safe, while helping you get started on overcoming your fears.

Business Meeting? Have A Mace Leatherette Pepper Spray

You are out trying to find a business address for an appointment with a new client.  You find the street and start looking for the correct building.  It is almost noon on a bright sunny day.  You can't find a parking space very close to the building, but you are willing to walk the half block to get to the appointment with your client.

What you don't realize is that you have been watched the entire time by someone who sees that it is obvious that you don't know the area and that you are in a vulnerable situation.  The person watching also realizes that since you are in a Mercedes and dressed to the nines, you probably have some cash or credit cards on you.

You walk to the front door of the office building, only to find it locked.  You start knocking - loudly - but there is no answer.  You are not feeling comfortable with the area, so you start walking quickly to another door in the building because it is closer to your car.  Before you get that far a young man "brushes" by you, knocks you down to the ground and takes off with your purse and briefcase, leaving you in shock and pain.  You start to scream and finally help - from inside the building you were trying to get into - arrives.

This is a true story.  It happened to one of our clients.  She now carries Mace Leatherette Pepper Spray.  She has said that she never wanted to deal with pepper spray or other self defense products before, but after this incident, she keeps it with her at all times.

She feels that if she could have defended herself with Mace Pepper Spray, she would not have been injured, the perpetrator would have been caught, and she would have ended up safe.  In addition, by the time the police arrived less than one hour later, the perpetrator had already run up over $5,000 in credit card bills.

Don't become a victim or a statistic.  Protect yourself with Mace products, especially Mace Leatherette Pepper Spray.  It is convenient - fits in hand, purse or pocket, and will spray up to 10 feet to disorient your attacker long enough for you to end up safe.

Pizza Dude

A would-be thief wanted a pizza, but he got a dose of pepper spray instead.

Late Tuesday night, a pizza delivery man was riding in an elevator at a hotel in Myrtle Beach, on his way to drop off a pizza at a room there.

There were six others in the elevator, he told Myrtle Beach police, and a young man told the pizza deliverer he was going to take the pie.

He reportedly pushed the pizza man's chest and tried to grab the food, but the pizza man said the elevator door opened and he doused the young man with pepper spray and the young man ran.

North Carolina Crime Rate Up For The Second Year In A Row

Attorney General Roy Cooper says the number of reported crimes in North Carolina increased slightly last year.

Cooper released figures Tuesday show that the crime rate increased by about one-tenth of a percent in 2007. That marks the second year in a row the state's crime rate has increased.

The data show reported rapes, assaults and robberies decreased slightly. But the state's murder rate increased by 8.5 percent.

Cooper said law enforcement officers are concerned the state's crime rate will rise if the economy continues to slow. He called on state officials to fund prevention efforts and give officers more crime-fighting resources.

Bear Season is here - Are You Ready?

Mad Bear

The weather has warmed, spring is finally here, and the bears are coming down from the mountains. It's officially bear season, which means Colorado Division of Wildlife officer Zach Holder is in full-scale bear awareness mode.

“They’re out of the den right now. This is when it’s starting,” said Holder. “It’s just important for people to know that we all live in bear country.”

Right now bears are moving a lot because they are in their mating season, said wildlife officer Holder. So there might be a lot of reports of sightings of bears moving through the area. The only bears in Colorado are black bears.

When out in the woods, hikers and other outdoors enthusiasts should carry bear spray, said Holder. Hikers should keep dogs on leashes so they don’t come upon bears suddenly, and adults should keep children between them on a hike.

It’s also smart to carry bear spray, a pepper-spray that deters bears and any other unwanted wildlife or individuals.

As more and more people move into the wildland-urban interface, or areas adjacent to forests and wild areas, there are more human-bear interactions, said Holder. The goal is to have humans and bears co-exist, he added.

Crime Goes Up - Laws Loosen Ohio Takes The Lead

By JIM PROVANCE
BLADE COLUMBUS BUREAU CHIEF
Potential victims who harm or kill apparent intruders in their homes or vehicles would get the legal benefit of the doubt under a just-passed bill destined to get Gov. Ted Strickland's signature.
Sponsored by Sen. Stephen Buehrer (R., Delta) and pushed by the National Rifle Association, the measure served as a magnet for changes to Ohio's 4-year-old law allowing law-abiding citizens to carry concealed handguns.

The changes will make it easier for motorists to carry weapons in their cars and in school zones and will prohibit landlords from forbidding tenants from having guns in their rented residences.

The measure was among a flurry of bills sent to the governor this week as lawmakers near summer recess. It won strong bipartisan support in both chambers, despite a lack of support from some law enforcement organizations.

The bill would take effect 90 days after Mr. Strickland signs it.

"He believes the legislation provides law-abiding gun owners with appropriate and reasonable protections, and he's looking forward to signing the bill," said Strickland spokesman Keith Dailey.

Commonly called the "Castle Doctrine," the bill shifts the burden away from the apparent victim to prosecutors and police to prove that an individual did not act in self-defense. The bill specifies that the legal resident does not have a duty to retreat when someone is illegally entering or attempting to enter his home or car.

"A lot of people believe that's the current law, that you have the ability to protect you and your family in your house," Mr. Buehrer said. "They are shocked to find out that's not the case. The general law in Ohio is if you're attacked, you have a duty to retreat. The courts have recognized that if you're in your home, you don't have a duty to retreat, but we're only one prosecutor or one judge away from losing that right in case law in Ohio."

Disputes under the law, however, have not been common in Ohio.

About half of the nation's states have some form of Castle Doctrine on their books. Mr. Buehrer said Ohio's does not go as far as some other states. Ohio's version would allow a prosecutor who doubts a self-defense story to file charges, but it would require the prosecutor to make his case by a "preponderance of the evidence."

"It's a high burden, but it does provide the opportunity to go there," he said.

The final bill dropped a provision in the original version that would have given the same protections to someone who claimed to have acted in self-defense outside his home.

Despite the changes, the Ohio Prosecuting Attorneys Association never dropped its opposition, arguing that the courts had already worked out a way for a defendant to demonstrate he was in reasonable fear of bodily harm when he acted.

After the bill passed the Senate, the House attached a number of amendments changing Ohio's concealed-carry law, particularly as it applies to carrying guns in vehicles.

When originally passed in 2004, the law required motorists to have the gun "in plain sight" so that it could be seen by a law enforcement officer approaching a vehicle. Later it was changed to require the gun to be holstered on the person in plain view or locked in a glove compartment or other box.

The latest version allows a motorist to keep a gun in an unlocked glove compartment or a center console, but the driver must still inform an officer that he is a permit-holder and has a gun in the vehicle.

"Current law doesn't make sense," said Jim Irvine, chairman of the Buckeye Firearms Association. "You can't put a gun in an unlocked glove box and you can't put it in a center console, but you can have it in a purse or brief case right next to you. We're trying to make the law work. Every change was to address real problems."

The Ohio State Highway Patrol initially opposed the change but later took a stance of neutrality.

"Our main concern was the officer's safety," said Lt. Shawn Davis, patrol spokesman.

Tripple Action Spray

With crime on the rise – especially assaults and personal attacks – people are looking for ways to protect themselves.

Selfdefense is an important issue and there is a lot of information out there and a variety of self-defense products.

There is one product that is a powerful three-fold weapon. This is an important and effective product that will throw a would-be attacker off-guard and help you stay safe. The product is called Triple Action Mace.

ripple Action Mace In use

Most people who are worried about being attacked and what they can do in the face of an attack. They are usually looking for a way to overpower their attacker without necessarily killing them. As a result, people are looking for non-lethal alternatives that will keep them safe.

Triple Action Mace protects you and disables your attacker in three powerful ways. It combines OC Pepper Spray, CN Tear Gas and UV Marking Dye. When you use this small but powerful tool, three things happen. The pepper causes the attacker’s eyes to slam shut and makes them start coughing and choking. While their eyes are still burning and they are coughing, the tear gas creates an intense burning to the face and tearing to the eyes, so by now they are disoriented, leaving you free to get away and call for help.

The third part of Triple Action Mace helps police or authorities to easily identify your attacker. The UV Dye marks the person’s face, skin and clothes, making it nearly impossible for the attacker not to be identified. Since the person will be disoriented and marked at the same time, if you are able to call the police quickly, your attacker should be able to easily be apprehended.

Triple Action Mace is easy to use, non-lethal and affordable. It comes in various sizes and styles, including some that fit in your purse or pocket so you can carry it with you everywhere and use it whenever necessary.

Self Defense Tips

1. If a potential attacker approaches you but has not yet touched you, make yourself into an unappealing target. Assuming a defensive stance may make the offender more likely to back off. Stand with your legs shoulder width apart, hands in front of you, and palms spread. Tell the attacker that you don’t want any trouble. If he or she still approaches, use your generously hit the jerk with mace pepper spray to the face.

2. If your attacker still poses a threat, there are many other areas of the body you can try to injure: —The groin is a very vulnerable area if your attacker is male. You can either kick him or grab the area and squeeze it. —A hard kick or stomping motion on the attacker’s instep can cause enough force to break his or her ankle. —Jab the attacker’s eyes using your fingers. —If your attacker grabs you from behind, turn your chin toward his or her elbow and force it down. This will relieve pressure on your throat and delay loss of consciousness. While in this position attack any areas you can reach, like kick the attacker’s groin or stomp his or her instep.

3. Almost any object you may be carrying can be used as an improvised weapon. Scratch the attacker with keys, jab pencils into his eyes or ears, jab his or her upper lip with a credit card or ID card. If you are wearing high heels, these can be used to stab your attacker’s foot or hand. Use anything you have to your advantage.

4. Beware of some defensive moves that can also cause injury to yourself. If you use your fists, try hitting so that your pinkie faces the surface; a traditional punch can injure your knuckles. Avoid kicking with the top of your foot. Make sure to keep your mouth closed; a blow to an open mouth can break your jaw. Keep your hands in front of your face for protection.

5. Make allot of noise, a perfect tool for this is a personal attack alarm that can be found at diyselfdefense.com this loud screeching sound may frighten off your attacker and attract attention from those who may be able to help.

6. Remember that your primary goal is to escape, and take advantage of any opportunity to flee.
