The Number One question we get from hikers and travelers;
"Does bear spray really work?"

Whether or not bear spray works is not a question that you want to find out the answer to with a grizzly bear charging at you at full speed.

There are several lab studies that suggest bear spray is better than a gun.

Over 20 years of statistics gathered shows conclusively that a bear sprayed with a direct hit from bear spray is more likely than a gun to stop attacking. This is perhaps the major reason that learning how to use bear spray is so important.

The study was done by both American and Canadian researchers and showed that bear spray stopped aggressive bears - whether they were attacking or foraging for food - over 92% of the time. Guns only worked 2/3, meaning a 1/3 chance that you end up as snack.

Below is an example of some fine bear spray that can help protect you outdoors from bears and bear attacks.

NNryYRZkftWAXCiYou have a good link above me, but just to correct a thhguot here, Mace is the original irritant spray used since the 1930 s in police work. OC Pepper is relatively newer and is FAR more powerful than Mace ever was. Irritants are rated by SHU's (Scoville Heat Units) which measures the burning effect on human skin. A Jalapeno pepper is rated at 7,500 SHU. Mace is rated at 12,000 SHU. OC Pepper ( oil based) is rated at 25,000 SHU. The newest police rated is now Phase IV, which is rated at 2,000,000 SHU ( Two million). Most departments do not use the Phase IV due to the extreme burning it will do to the skin, requiring hospital treatments.I hope this helps and you can find it useful Written by Loujiha on Tue 15 May 2012 3:16:29 PM GMT
